What is a Business Model Canvas-Values Propositions

BLOCK N°2: Value Propositions

This block designates the combination of products and services that offer Value for the customers segments. In other words is the offer that meets the needs of the customers segments block we already selected in the previousblock.

And keep in mind, the Value propositions is the reason why customers choose you and not your competitor.
In this sense, each customer segment deserves a unique value proposition which has to please and fulfil his desires.

Note: F(Desire’s Customers Segments) = Values Propositions

The combination of different elements creates a unique value proposition.
Below you can find a list of some elements contribute to the creation of a specific value proposition:

  • Newness: Satisfaction of new needs not yet perceived by the customers
  • Performance: Boosting performance. Example: more disk storage for PCs;
  • Customization;
  • Getting the job done: Outsourcing products;
  • Design;

  • Price;
  • Cost reduction of an another product. Example: Electric cars reduce the oil budget;
  • Risk Reduction: Example Warranty for a used car;
  • Accessibility;
  • Convenience/Usability;

Scanning the above list, we distinguish two kinds of values propositions elements:

What is a Business Model Canvas

Chapter 1:What is a Business Model Canvas
With the Ipod Business Model example step by step

How Apple dominate the market readily

Apple led the market as soon as they launched the IPod due to their innovation in the business model. On the one hand, Apple offered a better user experience by mixing three ingredients:

1-    Design: A original and distinctive IPods design;
2-    Software: A user-friendly software the iTunes;
3-    On-line Store: Possibility to purchase or download content easily.

The offer of Apple is to allow customers to easily search, buy and enjoy digital music.

On the other hand, to make this value proposition works, Apple had to bargain deals with all the record music leaders to create the largest online music library.

This strategy lets Apple earn money from selling iPods devices while protecting itself from competitors by the integration of the online music store.

To resume the difference between the iPods and others devices is the Business Model used to generate this highly preferment value proposition.

Business Model Definition

By definition, a Business model describes the rationale of how an organisation creates, delivers, and captures value.

The main concept of a Business Model Canvas that everybody understands describes and manipulates easily the Business Model of your organisation or of your competitors or any other enterprise.

Starting by the point that there are four main areas of a business:

-    Customers
-    Offer
-    Infrastructure
-    Financial Viability

This four areas can be divided into nine basic building blocks that show the logic of how a company intends to make money.

The business model is like a blueprint for a strategy to be implemented through organizational structures, processes, and systems.

The nine Building Blocks

BLOCK N°1: Customers Segments

Customers are the heart of any business model. The big question of any organisation who try to be profitable has to ask is "How can we satisfy our customers??" Without customers, no company can survive for long.

Therefore, you have to begin by knowing how are you customers, which are their needs, how they react to your products, which are their characteristics…
The better you know you customers, the better you will satisfy them by offering an adequate products and services.

In addition, once you know you customers you can divide them into segments that share similar characteristics. A business model defines one or several customers segments to serve or to ignore.

After choosing your customers, segments target you can craft your business model around their needs and characteristics.

Types of Customers Segments

  • Mass Market: Focus on one large group of customers with similar needs and problems.Niche Market: Specific, specialized customers segmentsDiversified: Serve different customers segments;
  • Multi-sided platforms (or multi-sided markets): Two or more interdependent customer segments. Example: Newspaper needs a large reader base and also needs advertisers.

Example: iPod Customers Segments

The iPod was designed for serving the mass market. In this time, we can distinguish one similar group, which they have the same problems and needs.

BLOCK N°2: Value Propositions

The IPod Business Model Story

After the return of Steve Jobs, in 2001 Apple launched a new portable media player, they called the iPod, the device enables users to transfer music and others content to/from a computer through the Itunes software. In addition, this program provides a seamless connection the Apple's on-line store, so users can purchase and download content.

This potent combination of device, software and on-line store quickly disrupted the music industry and positioned Apple on the first line of the market. In fact, iPod wasn't the first media player in the market, others devices were leading the market (Such us Diamond Multimedia) until they were outpaced by the iPod.

Analysing and studying this story, many questions jump in our head:
- How they do it?
- What is different than other devices?
- How they mixed this magical potion??

Searching for answers, we found that Apple didn't innovate in the device instead they innovate the Business Model.

Consequently, we switch our search to "How to Craft a Successful Business Model?"

How I Plan My Day With Evernote

In the era of technologies and fast data transition, we need to be more faster on recognition and filtration. If we look deeply in this situation we can find that is due to the data transmitting, furthermore we are submerged by information everywhere such as the increasing numbers of smartphones, below you can find a chart showing that the number of smartphone users will reach 2.66 billion on 2019 / 36% of the worldwide population equipped with a Smartphone. (Are you one of them).

Therefore, to be more productive and to be able to track this era, we have to change our habit in function of our environment. Consequently, now I m forcing my self to use apps in my daily routine.

One of the best note-taking apps that I m using is Evernote "The workspace for your life's work" for three main reasons:

-1 / Firstly, The information model used by Evernote it's very simple and highly productive. Below a chart explaining the data organization:

If we compare it to one of our office furniture it will be as an Office cupboard (Stack), has many filing cabinets (Notebook), filled with notes, and in each notes there is a lot of tags. The difference is you can't filter all your notes in your real office cupboard. Do you have an idea about the time won finding a notes taken in the last year tagged OPPORTUNITY...

Example: Surfing on the net you can land in many useful tips and tricks about VlookUp EXCEL formula. What I do: I create a notebook named "Collect" and I capture all this tricks on it and I tag them Excel, tricks, VlookUp.

One day, when I will working on my Excel and I need to know how to use VlookUp formula, I will check Evernote to find the tricks that I saw last month.

-2 /Secondly, It's freemium app, you can get a 60MB/month for a free subscription (A huge size for note taking). The app allows users to create a "note" which can be a piece of formatted text, a full webpage or webpage excerpt, a photograph, a voice memo, or a handwritten "ink" note.

Example: Usually when I m driving, I receive a tremendous number of phone calls. "How can I take notes of all this data".

What I DO: I ask Siri (Apple personnel assistant) to open Evernote and take note of it. And I tag it @Car.

3/ Finally, It's a cross-platform:  Evernote supports a number of operating system platforms (including OS X, iOS, Chrome OS, Android, Microsoft Windows, Windows Phone, BlackBerry 10, and webOS) and also offers online synchronization and backup services.). Thus you can follow all your notes and to-do lists every were.

Example: When I m in my office. In my laptop I check all the notes tagged @Car and Evernote lists me all the notes token at my car.

I Highly advice you to try Evernote
